Preparedness in Uncertain Times: Asking the Hard Questions

Today I had a sobering conversation with a friend about emergency preparedness. The world feels like it’s shifting — missile strikes, rising tensions, and threats we can’t fully define. Cyberattacks? Terrorism? Infrastructure failures? The possibilities are unsettling.

Working in healthcare, I even raised the question to my colleagues: What is our role if disaster strikes? The answers weren’t clear. Policies exist, but some scenarios remain beyond our grasp. And that’s part of what makes preparedness so complex. It’s not just about gear or stockpiles. It’s also about the conversations we’re willing to have.

Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is start the conversation — ask the questions no one wants to bring up. Clarity often begins with courage.

Preparedness is about more than supplies. It’s a mindset — one that holds space for vigilance, for faith, and for the willingness to face uncertainty head-on. These are uncertain times. Maybe the only certainty is to be as prepared as we reasonably can — and to trust God with the rest.
