Book Review: The Sexless Marriage by Sylvia Bayati

Sylvia Bayati The Sexless Marriage: A Relationship Guide
Sylvia Bayati The Sexless Marriage: A Relationship Guide

I was first interested in reading The Sexless Marriage: A Relationship Guide by Sylvia Bayati because the title grabbed me as a contradictory statement. I had to know about this phenomenon. My curiosity was piqued because there must be an audience for this sort of book in order for Bayati to sit down and pen this work. As a healthcare blogger, I love to consider all things that contribute to good health and well-being or lack thereof, so I decided to review it with my readers in mind.

After skimming the book cover, I was shocked to learn that a considerable number of married Americans are having sex 10 or less times a year. That statistic sucked me in and made me want to learn more about the root of the problem and see what kind of advice Bayati has to offer.

Bayati writes from a Christian perspective and this was appealing to me. She is definitely a lover of music and often refers to lyrics and song titles when describing the emotional reaction of being a party to a sexless marriage. That was a bit distracting, at times. However, she intertwines her anecdotal messages with Biblical scripture that supports the fidelity of marriage and guides the reader on how to restore it.

There is a chapter in The Sexless Marriage for every individual, marrieds (husbands and wives), separated, divorced and singles. As a single woman, it gave me many things to consider before marriage and provided some insight into the challenges that married couple face and how to overcome them. In the African-American community, we’ve heard quite a bit about the staggeringly low statistics for marriage. However, it’s important that we embrace emotionally healthy relationships and marriages as one of the keys to good health. Are you familiar with the health benefits of sex? Companionship, attraction and an emotionally healthy relationship are the foundations of a great sex life, which is a part of a good marriage.

Bayati offers some sage advice in The Sexless Marriage: A Relationship Guide I encourage you to read it, no matter your marital status. It may help you directly or allow you to encourage someone close to you. Peace and blessings!
